Manuel Valls Returns as Overseas Territories Minister
One noteworthy event has occurred in France, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a new government, appointing his fourth prime minister this year, Francois Bayrou, to lead a team, aiming to steer the country, the EU’s second-largest economy, out of its political crisis and ensure the passage of the 2025 budget. Macron named former prime minister Elisabeth Borne, 63, education minister in a new cabinet under centrist Bayrou, announced Elysee secretary-general Alexis Kohler. Another former premier, Manuel Valls, 62, returned as overseas territories minister, while former interior minister Gerald Darmanin became justice minister. Both Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot kept their jobs, the presidency said.
Three New Ministers Sworn into Rwanda’s Government
Shifting our focus to Rwanda, three new ministers take oath in Rwanda, Nelly Mukazayire was appointed Minister of Sports, while Rwego Ngarambe assumed the role of Minister of State in the Ministry of Sports. Godfrey Kabera was also sworn in as Minister of State for National Treasury in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.
Former PM Manmohan Singh Passes Away at AIIMS Hospital
In India, Former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh was admitted to AIIMS hospital, where he breathed his last on 26 December. Health problems also increase with increasing age. It is being told that Dr Manmohan Singh had age-related medical conditions. Apart from this, the former Prime Minister had also lost consciousness. Not only this, Manmohan Singh was also suffering from respiratory disease.
U.S. Appeals Court Halts Enforcement of Corporate Beneficial Ownership Disclosure Law
In the realm of regulatory affairs, a U.S. appeals court has halted enforcement of an anti-money laundering law that requires corporate entities to disclose the identities of their real beneficial owners to the U.S. Treasury Department ahead of a deadline for most companies to do so. The New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated, opens new tab late Thursday a nationwide injunction that had been issued this month by a federal judge in Texas who had concluded the Corporate Transparency Act was unconstitutional.
Cambodian Opposition Leader Sentenced to Jail and Election Ban
Shifting our attention to Cambodia, the leader of a Cambodian opposition party has been sentenced to two years in jail and banned from running for office after he was found guilty of inciting social disorder, in the latest legal case to target government critics. Sun Chanthy, the president of the Nation Power party, was found guilty of the charge at a court in Phnom Penh. He also faces a fine of 4m riel (£800) and has been stripped of his right to vote or stand for election. The defence lawyer Choung Choungy said the ruling was an “injustice” to his client and that they were considering whether to appeal.
