Canada: B.C.’s Finance Minister Prepares for Major Tax Cut

One noteworthy event has occurred in Canada, B.C.’s new Finance Minister Brenda Bailey is receiving competing advice as she prepares to deliver one of Premier David Eby’s signature campaign promises: a tax cut of $1,000 per average household to help British Columbians pay the bills. The Haitian PM is well-known in Haiti’s business world. He is the owner and shareholder of several companies, including Haiti Networking Group SA (HAINET), an internet service provider in Haiti; Blanchisserie du Soleil, a dry cleaning chain; COFI Industrie SA, a manufacturer of paper products; and San Aquino SA, which is involved in developing the tourism industry.

Moldova: Adrian Efros Resigns as Minister of Internal Affairs

In Moldova, Adrian Efros has announced his resignation from the position of Minister of Internal Affairs. The resignation announcement comes ahead of this evening’s press conference, during which Prime Minister Dorin Recean is expected to announce a cabinet reshuffle. Media reports suggest that Adrian Efros is set to be replaced by Daniella Misail-Nichitin, currently a state secretary at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Adrian Efros was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs in July 2023.

Nigeria: Progress in Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing

In the realm of regulatory affairs, in Nigeria, the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit says the country has secured additional grades in its fight against terrorism financing and money laundering. The agency noted that the ratification was done at a meeting of the Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa technical commission, which took place between November 17 and 23, 2024, in Freetown, the Republic of Sierra Leone. Financial Action Task Force had in 2023 greylisted Nigeria due to a rise in capital inflows and deficiencies in combating money laundering, terrorism, and arms financing However, in a statement from the NFIU, the agency said Nigeria had been adjudged Compliant (C) or Largely Compliant in 37 out of the 40 recommendations.

Jordan: Lawmaker Sentenced for Smuggling Weapons into West Bank

Shifting our attention to Jordan, a Jordanian court sentenced one of the kingdom’s lawmakers to 10 years of hard labor after convicting him of smuggling weapons into the West Bank. Imad al-Adwan was arrested at the Israel-administered Allenby Border Crossing (also called the King Hussein Crossing) between Jordan and the West Bank on April 22, 2023, when Israeli security forces found 12 rifles and 194 pistols in his car, Israel’s Shin Bet internal security agency said at the time. Israel transferred him to Jordanian authorities in May last year, and he was eventually convicted of exporting weapons with the intention of illegal use after being stripped of his parliamentary immunity.
