Recent and upcoming elections influence the worldwide political landscape in eight nations, slated between Oct 26, 2024 and Nov 05, 2024. These elections hold significant importance, as they will determine the direction and governance of each respective country’s future.
New Governor Elected in Czechia
One noteworthy event has occurred in Czechia, the leader of the ANO movement and deputy Ladislav Oklestek, who was the head of the region from 2017 to 2020, was elected as the new governor of the Olomouc Region today at the constituent meeting of the council. He replaced Josef Suchánek (STAN). 52 out of 55 deputies were present, 34 deputies voted for his election, six were against and 12 abstained.
In the next four years, the Olomouc Region will lead the ANO movement with the SPD, Trikolora, PRO and Svobodných groups. The dual coalition has 31 votes in the fifty-five-member council. For the past four years, the region was ruled by a coalition of Pirates and STAN with representatives of the ODS and Allies for the Olomouc region.
Indonesian Cabinet Announced
Shifting our focus to Indonesia, President Prabowo Subianto has announced the names of ministers that will be part of his cabinet after being inducted to the presidency succeeding Joko Widodo on Sunday. Following the presidential gala dinner attended by the minister and deputy minister-designates at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, Prabowo revealed that his cabinet will be known as the “Red and White Cabinet”.
“Per agreement between leaders of political parties in our coalition, we name this cabinet ‘Red and White Cabinet’,” the president stated on Sunday evening. Prabowo was accompanied by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad while announcing cabinet members.
Vietnam’s Legislative Vote Brings Military Leadership to Presidency
In Vietnam, Legislators have elected an army general as the new state president. the post is the second highest in the country’s political hierarchy. The move is seen as an attempt to stabilize the country’s politics. Luong Cuong took the oath on Monday after 440 deputies unanimously elected him. He pledged to strengthen Vietnam’s national security, and seek an independent and multilateral foreign policy.
Cuong served more than 40 years in the army, and in May became the fifth-ranking official of the Communist Party’s decision-making bureau. He takes over the role from To Lam, who was appointed in August to the more powerful job of general secretary of the Communist Party. Two other presidents had resigned within a year and a half amid an anti-corruption campaign spearheaded by Vietnam’s former leader, who died in July. Cuong comes from the army while Lam earlier served as public security minister. Observers say the latest appointments are aimed at restoring balance between Vietnam’s military and security factions.
Penalty Imposed on Union Bank of India
In the realm of regulatory affairs, in India, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has imposed a fine of Rs 54 lakh on the Union Bank of India for “failing” to report suspicious transaction reports and for not undertaking due diligence under the anti-money laundering law for certain accounts at one of its branches in Mumbai. The federal agency issued the penalty notice under section 13 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on October 1 as it observed that the charges against the lender were “substantiated” after it considered written and oral submissions made by the bank.
Former Peruvian President Sentenced
Shifting our attention to Peru, ex-President Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison, the latest Latin American leader to be jailed in connection with the Odebrecht construction firm corruption scandal. Toledo was convicted of taking $35m in bribes from the Brazilian construction firm in exchange for a freeway construction contract, and was sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison.
